Causes for women to support

Written by: Giulia Simolo

Being a woman is synonymous with being powerful and strong. But it is also about not knowing boundaries. It was author Virginia Woolf who claimed, ‘As a woman I have no country. As a woman my country is the world.’ Using your strength to unite with others and make a difference should be what every one of us strives to do to make the world a better place.

You might wonder what joining a cause can achieve. After all, you have limited resources and energy on your own, and signing up to make a small difference doesn’t seem like a big deal. But it is because every bit counts and it also makes a difference in your life – if you can extend some help to others, you enrich your soul and feel more connected to the amazing universe in which we live. Here are some causes every woman should support.

Helping your family, helping the world

Insurance is always a must for you and your family because you never know when life will throw you a curveball. But did you know insurance can form part of your eco-friendly lifestyle? Green Insurance donates a portion of your monthly premiums to an eco-friendly cause and you get to choose which eco-charity or organisation receives the donation. Green Insurance offers car, home and building insurance, as well as cover for portable possessions. Committing to an insurance company that has its priorities in the right place means that you invest in insurance to protect yourself and your family, and in the bigger picture it becomes an investment in the environment’s wellbeing.

Do something for your country

Charity starts at home, as the old saying goes. But don’t think of your home as simply your house – think of it as your country. Earthlife Africa is a non-profit organisation that aims to support individuals, businesses and industries to decrease pollution, minimise waste and safeguard our country’s natural resources. On their website you can become a member and find out about causes to participate in, or simply show that you support the cause of a healthier country, such as by vowing not to harm the environment, other people or blocking your own self growth in your life.

Educate your children

The future of our world is in the hands of the next generation, so don’t underestimate how important it is to educate your children from a young age about the benefits of greener living. This is the greatest deed you can do for the world. Not only will this action encourage in your children a respect for the world and what it offers us, but it will also mean that they live healthier lifestyles and grow into conscientious, caring adults. You can start by teaching your children about recycling items, not causing unnecessary waste and re-using whatever they can so as to give it new life. Remember to lead by example because children follow what you do more than what you tell them to do!

Start your own cause

You’ve signed some environment petitions and have been adopting green living tips. But what next? Why not take your green living one step further so that you can inspire others and start a revolution in your community? If you allow yourself to think creatively, you can make a difference in your neighbourhood, family or social circle. For instance, talk about eco-friendly living and its importance, start a campaign in your community that encourages its inhabitants to recycle or start a play group that focuses on letting children explore nature instead of wasting away their youth and electricity resources with technology. In simple ways you can start to make a positive change in your life and the lives of those around you.
