Ronan’s Eco Mission

At first it seemed like a bit of effort for good publicity after he was exposed as a cheating husband, but it seems Irish pop singer Ronan Keating’s mission to help the environment is the real deal. What mission, you ask? To save the giant clam!

Apparently the giant clam is a species that’s very close to extinction, so Ronan has jumped on the cause to try to raise awareness on the issue. At a ‘Save the Giants’ event in Borneo in April, Ronan sang ‘Yes we clam!’, boosting people’s motivation to join the cause. At the same event, Ronan expressed the possibility of becoming an ambassador for this cause, claiming, ‘Sting has the rainforest, maybe I have the giant clam,’ according to a report by The Irish Sun.

But it’s more than ego. Ronan knows the importance of using his fame in a positive way, as a means to spread awareness on important global issues. He has been involved in other good causes, such as doing work for cancer charities around the world. It was his role in the movie Goddess in which he plays a marine biologist that sparked his interest in Gayana’s Giant Clam Project. His involvement with the cause could result in a long-term partnership with the resort’s marine efforts.

Gayana Eco Resort is involved in the breeding of giant clams to ensure that they do not become extinct due to issues such as irresponsible fishing practices and over-harvesting. There are special reef aquariums at Gayana’s Marine Ecology Research Centre that create a favorable environment for giant clams to prosper from infancy. The bright lighting enables them to gain energy for photosynthetic processes while regular doses of calcium help them develop thick and healthy shells.

Did you know? Our environment needs giant clams to filter sea water. Without them, our waters will become murky and filled with toxins that will put our marine life in danger.
