If you’re getting away for a spring fling or much-needed break, sometimes there is no way around having to step onto a plane. But before you do, here are some tips to show you how to fly green.

Avoid the stopover

If you are able to, book a direct flight to your destination. When a plane has to conduct a stopover, it uses more fuel and that’s bad for the environment. Did you know a large amount of fuel costs are a result of a plane’s take-off and landing? So, by going directly to your destination, you’re lowering fuel costs, avoiding the stress of having to connect to another flight, and being kinder to the planet.

Only pack what you need

Okay, this is not always an easy one if you are prone to pack a two-week luggage for a three-day weekend. But bear this in mind: more luggage means a heavier plane, which requires more fuel to be used. When packing, first make a list of what you’ll really need and try to double up clothing. For instance, a pair of denim shorts could be great for daytime lunches with the girls and for hitting the beach.

Find a fuller flight

Think of a plane in the same way as your washing machine. In the same way that it’s kinder to the planet to do a full load of washing (so as not to waste water), it makes sense for a plane to be fuller. The more passengers in a plane, the smaller the carbon footprint will be per person flying because there is no waste of resources due to fewer people taking to the skies. Try to fly when most people are going to be doing the same thing, such as during the holidays.

Leave the luxuries

Although you might use the disposable goods that are offered during your flight, such as ear plugs, sleep masks and toothbrushes, try to reduce waste by bringing your own items from home instead. Leave the provided goodies for the next person to use so that you prevent waste.
