It Takes TWO to Tango

A quick chat to Jo’burg sisters Caren and Gina Waldman of fashion design duo TWO:

How would you describe your designs?

We make clothes that are comfortable without being sloppy and that fit real women’s bodies in a flattering way. We consider our luxury basics collection to be the ultimate capsule wardrobe; they provide the foundation that can be added to and built on.

What is it about artisan clothing process that makes it so much better than the sweatshop kind?

We think that being in touch with the people who make and sell your brand makes the experience so much more genuine for the consumer. We are personally completely invested in what we do and I think that comes across in our clothes.

As a local South African brand, we have a strong focus on job creation and ethical business practices, something which we are committed to despite the challenges; we are very passionate about living here and supporting our community.

How does TWO fit into the new ‘slow fashion’ movement?

Our primary focus has always been on luxury basics, garments that you will wear for a long time that aren’t trend-driven or seasonal. We like to manufacture from the highest quality fabrics, ensuring that our garments will be worn all year round.

What kinds of fabrics do you use?

The highest quality viscose and cotton lycra that we can source! We love natural fibres and most of our range is cotton and viscose which wear, sit and fit really well.

Do you believe the credit crunch has caused people to invest more in classics?

Yes absolutely. Consumers want to get more wear out of their clothing and so are buying garments that are more versatile – meaning that they can be dressed up or down and are cross seasonal.
