Have a Merry Eco Christmas

Chances are you’ll be spending Christmas with your family or friends, and perhaps this will involve a big lunch or get together. Here’s how to make your celebration as eco-friendly as possible.

Green décor

Instead of purchasing a lot of Christmas decorations that end up thrown away or stored away and taking up space until next year, why not make your own with items out of things you already have? This is also a great way to encourage creativity in your kids and it can become a fun family tradition. Use old chandelier earrings as Christmas tree baubles, flowers from the garden can be great as simple yet colourful table settings, and baked cookies strung with ribbons can make decorations delicious.

Festive organic meals

If you want organic meals for Christmas, you’re on the right track! Did you know that 30% of a person’s carbon footprint is made up of their food choices? Organic foods are not only good for the environment, but they’re also healthy and delicious.

Tips for the table:

  1. Forget the side dishes of mashed potatoes and bread. There are healthier treats, such as pumpkin and sweet potato that are better for you.
  2. Use coconut oil when cooking. It’s healthier than vegetable oil and doesn’t oxidize with heat or age food cells like vegetable oils do.
  3. You don’t have to use a lot of electricity in the kitchen in order to create delicious desserts – they’re right on your doorstep! Organic summer fruits are easy ways to enjoy treats after lunch. Just roast fruit and add some organic cream (available from Woolworths ) to them for a tasty treat.
  4. Choose organic wines that are healthier for you. Try Avondale wines that only use natural yeast fermentation and are made under strict international organic standards.
  5. If your guests are not vegetarian and are anticipating the turkey, you can still make this an eco-friendly choice by opting for a free range turkey. These are raised in natural environments without preservatives, antibiotics or herbicides. This makes them safer to consume and also more nutritious.
