liam power remake design challenge

Meet Liam Power, one of our five Remake Design Challenge FASHION finalists. Liam is currently in his 2nd year at CPUT {Cape Peninsula University of Technology}. We find out what makes this smart and smily, yet reserved young designer tick…

If your collection had a theme song, what would it be?

Gorillaz – November has come.

One thing we need to know about you as a designer?

I try to always be open to new ways of approaching design. For example considering a mistake as an important part of the process which could lead to new outcomes. My desired outcome is not always the final outcome.

I can’t start my day without…

A bowl of oats, honey and a banana.

You are currently obsessed with?

Quality Drum and Bass music and SHOWstudio.com

Name one designer you would most like to meet?

Dries van Noten.

If you could dress any celeb for a red carpet event, who would it be?

Miley Cyrus.

My own style is…

Suave.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

If you fail to prepare, you are preparing to fail.

Tell us a little more about your ’TRANSPARENCY’ collection. What inspired you?

My ‘TRANSPARENCY’ collection is my take on combining African heritage with a sporty contemporary male silhouette. I feel that commercial menswear in South Africa has a dull colour palette, a lack of prints as well as silhouettes that are copied from European leaders. My collection includes longer over-garments, opulent embellishments and exciting prints that were inspired by my personal style; fabrics I sourced, African culture and a reaction against fashion in South Africa being controlled by profit margins and business leaders.

What challenges have you experienced by adhering to the competition principles of using sustainable design techniques?

I felt that the process of collecting the fabrics was an adventure but at the same time very critical. The decision to exclude or include; up-cycle or recycle certain fabrics pushed me into unknown areas of design thinking.

What’s on your horizon?

I want to be able to confidently say that I can make excellent men’s clothing. So I am hoping that the clothing I can make will take me to new places and will allow for me to meet interesting people.

What excites you?

Fabric. I find true value in textiles and it excites me to know the possibilities that lie in one pieces of fabric.

How do your friends describe you?

Quite, reserved, takes risks, smiley, smart.

What is your most treasured piece in your wardrobe?

The first pair of jeans I made.

Top tip when it comes to sustainable design?

Anything can be made from ‘nothing’.
