The Most Eco-Friendly Cities to Visit

eco-friendly cities

When taking a holiday, you want to ensure that it’s as green as possible. Here some of the most eco-friendly cities in the world and the cool ways in which they high-five the planet.

1. Take a Ride in London

Many carbon emissions during travels are caused by transportation. London offers greener ways to get around, thanks to its hybrid buses that have been in operation since 2012. Although they are equipped with conventional engines, they also have electric motors. The result?  Cleaner fuel efficiency. Energy wastage is prevented because the hybrid buses can be continuously charged so as to go longer distances than conventional buses. According to the London.gov.uk website, hybrid buses cut carbon emissions by half when compared to regular diesel buses. Take a ride through the city on a hybrid bus to enjoy other green activities, such as sampling eco restaurants and outlets that form part of the program to lower food wastage.

2. Eat Green in Copenhagen

The city of Copenhagen is working towards becoming carbon-neutral by the year 2025. It is regarded as the most eco-friendly city in Europe. When you’re exploring a new city, you want to be able to indulge in delicious organic treats and you can find loads of green restaurants in this beautiful city. There are organic options for various cuisines – you’ll even find hot dog stands that serve organic meat. Some of the restaurants, such as the charming BioM, go one step further by ensuring that even the paint on their walls is organic!

3. Earth-Friendly Power in Malmö, Sweden

A large portion of Sweden’s electricity originates from nuclear and hydropower. The city of Malmö in particular is participating in a big way to make the country greener. An eco-friendly area is the Western Harbour, a previously neglected shipyard that has been turned into a sustainable urban location. The Harbour functions on renewable energy sourced from wind, hydropower and sun. Even the buildings in this area are made from sustainable materials. When you’re there, you’ll find many people getting around by walking or cycling. Be sure to visit the hotspots in the city, such as the gorgeous Malmöhus Castle and the Folkets Park where you can dance up a storm at the Cuba Café.

4. Beach Holiday in Cape Town

South Africa boasts some pretty neat eco-friendly destinations. One of these is gorgeous Cape Town that has been showered with accolades in recent years when it comes to being green.  In 2011, the Table Mountain was named one of the Seven New Wonders of Nature while the city was given the nod by National Geographic as being one of the Top 10 Beach Cities in the world, with Clifton Fourth Beach achieving a Blue Flag ranking for sticking to environmental standards. When finding eco accommodation for your sun ’n surf holiday, there are some great choices, such as The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa, the first hotel in Cape Town to install energy-efficient LED lighting in all its public areas.
