Pharrell Unveils G-Star “Raw for the Oceans” at New York Fashion Week

Pharrell Williams together with denim label G-Star Raw made a splash at New York Fashion Week last week when they took to the stage at 23 Wall Street on Friday to unveil the “Raw for the Oceans” collection for Spring/Summer 2015.

Like the line that preceded it, the upcoming range incorporates fibers derived by Pharrell’s Bionic Yarn eco-textile firm from salvaged ocean plastic. “It’s very easy to forget we live on this planet,” Pharrell told the audience. “We don’t want to just talk about it, but we actually wanted to put it in practice.”

Happy Oceans, Happy Life

Unlike most designers, who wait till after the models have made their rounds on the runway before revealing themselves, Williams stood front and center among the looks he helped create. Framed by ghostly underwater projections on the walls and ceiling, and clad in head-to-toe Raw for the Oceans, the Happy hitmaker was the very picture of the label’s “Happy Oceans, Happy Life” ethos.

So why denim?
“Denim is one of the most cherished fabrics on Earth—and one of the most traditional,” Williams said. “With Raw for the Oceans, we have created the next generation.”
