The Dangers of Sunscreen

There are some scary chemicals hiding out in your sunscreen.

Sunscreen is one of the products you use most often, lathering it on every time you step outside. And if you don’t, learning about the skin dangers that can occur from UV exposure will hopefully prompt you to carry that sunscreen tube everywhere you go. But just because sunscreen protects your skin, it doesn’t mean that all sunscreens are good for you. Research continuously finds reasons why conventional sunscreen can be a danger to your health.

Block Out the Sun — But At What Cost?

There are some scary chemicals hiding out in your sunscreen. These include oxybenzone that experiences a chemical reaction when your skin absorbs it, and it can lead to allergic reactions as well as hormone disruption. Anything that messes with your hormones can lead to illnesses, such as cancer, and health issues – even decreased sperm function.

Anything with ethyl, methyl, propyl and butyl are a no-no.

Preservatives are also found in sunscreens, such as parabens. These can lead to allergic reactions, as well as reproductive problems. Look out for them in ingredients lists: anything with ethyl, methyl, propyl and butyl are a no-no.

Using a spray-on sunscreen might feel convenient, but there have been reports that it is unsafe to apply on children as it makes it easier for the product ingredients to be breathed in. Added to this, there have also been cases of people getting burnt badly after applying spray-on sunscreen because of its flammable nature. After application, standing near an open flame, grill, welding area – or even lighting a cigarette – can lead to injuries.

Rub on the Natural Ingredients

You want to protect your skin and body against the harmful sun’s rays but you should also feel good about the sunscreen you’re applying. You can achieve both of these things by using a natural sunscreen that doesn’t contain harmful chemicals. By replacing the toxic ingredients with organic ones, you can nourish your skin.

Sunumbra Daily is a natural broad spectrum sunscreen that contains nourishing and safe ingredients such as kigelia fruit extract (its quercetin and luteolin content strengthens the skin’s collagen) and Cape chestnut oil (it protects against ultraviolet light), while being free of harmful ingredients such as fragrance, parabens, mineral oils and titanium dioxide. It’s also not tested on animals. Sunumbra Daily is easy to apply and won’t leave you with greasy or white streaks so your skin can be beautiful under the sun.
