When you swim in your Sponge Suit bikini, you can clean the ocean’s filthy water while you have fun.

Everyone wants to do great things for the planet. When you’re on holiday, such goals might be placed on the backburner. Imagine if you could do a good deed for the ocean by cleaning up its pollution while you relax and have a good time? Enter the 3D bikini called the Sponge Suit!

Clean While You Swim

When you swim in your Sponge Suit bikini, you can clean the ocean’s filthy water while you have fun. Just as its name suggests, the Suit contains sponge that absorbs pollutants. It can absorb toxins and even oil from spills because it repels water while sucking in chemicals in the ocean around you. If you reckon it won’t be able to clean a lot, this bikini can absorb around 25 times its weight!

What happens to the toxins that you are then carrying in your bikini, you ask? Thankfully, the sponge does not release the pollutants until it is subjected to 1,000 degrees Celsius!  This makes the suit really safe to wear.

Look Good While Doing Good

The bikini was designed by researchers from the University of California Riverside. The sponge is moulded into the shape of a bikini and then placed in a net produced out of 3D-printed elastomer. Its sponge that absorbs all the toxins is replaceable – once you’ve used it 20 times, it loses its absorptive power and you can just replace it, making it great for your sustainable wardrobe. You’re probably wondering just how heavy this bikini is, but at just 54 grams it is light and comfortable. So, you can wear it to the beach and still look trendy.

Although it’s not on the market yet, the team of researchers is hoping it will be launched within a few years. Now imagine if everyone bought one and took it to the beach on their next holiday? We’d be able to do a whole lot of good for our beautiful oceans.
